I founded HEART AND SOUL LINE DANCE in 2004 in Riverside, California, for the promotion of wellness through the avenue of soul line dance instruction, which combines elements of dance with the music of Motown, Rhythm and Blues, Gospel, Salsa and Jazz.
As a health educator with a Master of Public Health (emphasis on Health Promotion and Education), I believe in the concept of engaging and entertaining in order to educate, so our classes are fun and relaxing. By the time we’ve done a few warm-up dances, the endorphins (“feel good” chemical messengers) have kicked in and we’re having a good time, dancing to the music of our lives.
Soul line dancing is a social dance form that can be done in groups, with no partner needed. Soul line dancing is a “gateway” exercise that energizes formerly sedentary people and has led some to move on to the regular performance of other exercises.
Studies have shown that exercise improves the health of both older and younger individuals. It has been determined that people who followed a schedule of regular physical activity, either moderate or strenuous, were only half as likely to show physical decline as those who were inactive.
It’s been my goal to “infect” the Southern California Inland Empire with the soul line dance “virus”, “contracted” during a year-long stint in Jewel Lucas’ Stanford Soul Line Dance Class in the Bay area, coordinated by the Honorable LaDoris Cordell, Assistant Vice President & Special Counselor to the President, Stanford University. Jewel continues to be a mentor for me and I’m so happy that she and her Northern California Soul Strutters have come to the Inland Empire several times to celebrate our anniversaries with us and ''show us how it's done!
Marva Black, with her L.A. Country Strutters, has also been an invaluable source of inspiration to me. We’ve enjoyed our “class field trips” to dance with her students, and look forward to returning their hospitality.
I can’t say “thank you” enough to all of you who’ve supported our classes.
LET’S KEEP ON DANCING!
